The Lincolnshire Refuge

Archive Entry #011 — The Lincolnshire Refuge

Recorded: Unknown • Location: North Lincolnshire

The belief is not written down in any official record, but it persists locally.

According to some accounts, the figure commonly associated with Sherwood Forest did not confine his movements to Nottinghamshire alone.

It is said he travelled north along the old Roman road later known as Ermine Street, following the route that now forms part of the A15, moving between London and York.

In these accounts, refuge was taken at a small religious house near Appleby, close to the River Ancholme. The site lies just off the Roman road, within reach of woodland and water.

Those familiar with the area point out that the route would have allowed goods, travellers, and money to move unnoticed through Lincolnshire.

Stories persist of a figure seen among the trees in the surrounding woods, particularly near Appleby and Broughton, usually at dusk or early morning.

No consistent description is given. Only that the figure appears briefly, then disappears from view.

The belief is passed on quietly, often as an aside rather than a claim.

Recorded as received.
